43 INT. ARMENIAN DINER, DOWNTOWN BOSTON -NIGHT

A small and shabby restaurant Garabedian is having a bowl of soup. Opposite to him, Mike's going over his notes. They're having dinner together.

MIKE: You said one of the victimcs filed a criminal complaint?

GARABEDIAN: Yeah, they were a few of them.

have the case record sealed: 우리 말에는 없지만 이 문장 형태를 정말 자주 써. 쉽게 생각해야돼. 그냥 동사 have/get 쓰고 대상 나오고 그걸 설명하는 말을 붙여서 상황을 설명하는거야. 이렇게 대상 + 상태를 하나의 의미단위로 해서 계속 여러 개의 의미단위를 붙여서 말하는 것이 영어의 특징 중의 하나야.

그리고 교회는 많은 친구가 있어.

GARABEDIAN: Yeah. Let's just say he's not part of the solution.
그래. 그렇다고 해두자 걔는 해결책이 아니라고.
let's just say when you do not give a lot of details about something. 그러니까 어떤 거에 대해서 사족을 달기 싫을 때 쓴대.

알겠지 무슨 말 내가 하는지?
You follow what I am saying? = Do you get it?, Do you understand? Do you know what I mean?

MIKE: Sure.

Mike jot down some notes. Garabedian watches him.

GARABEDIAN: You work hard, Mr. Rezendes.

Are you married?
결혼은 했니?
영어에서 결혼하다(결혼해 있다)는 'be married', 결혼할거야는 'getting married'. 이혼하는 것도 'I am divorced', 'I am getting divorced' 로 말하면 돼. 근데 나랑 결혼해 줘는 'Marry me'로 써야겠지? 너랑 결혼하고 싶어는 'I wanna marry you'. 즉 marry는 동작을 나타내는 동사이고 married는 어떤 상태를 가리키는 형용사야. 문법책에서 배운 과거분사니 이런 용어는 별로 영어 향상에 도움이 안되는 것 같아. 오히려 헷갈리게만 만들고.

MIKE: Yeah.

GARABEDIAN: Your wife doesn't mind if you working all the time?
니 아내 신경안써 니가 일하는 거 계속해서?
doesn't mind 개념치 않아... 괜찮아... She does. = she minds. 안괜찮아...
mind 는 정신과 관련있는 단어야. 이게 동사로 쓰면 '정신 속에 담아두다' 즉, '신경쓰다' 같은 의미로 자주 쓰여. I don't mind하면 I don't care의 좀 더 격식있는 표현이 돼.

she does = she minds.

Garabedian salts his soup.

GARABEDIAN: That's why I never got married.
그게 왜 내가 절대 결혼하지 않는가야. 
'결혼하다'가 또 나왔네. 여기서는 am 대신에 get 썼어. '장가들다'의 어감이 느껴져. 중요한 녀석은 상태를 나타내는 married야.

I am too busy. What I do is too important.
나 너무 바빠. 내가 하는 게 너무 중요해.

GARABEDIAN: Your new Editor, he's a Jew, right?
니네 편집장 이스라엘 사람이지, 맞지?

MIKE: Ah, that's right. Yeah.

GARABEDIAN: Yeah, see... he comes in and suddenly everybody's interested in the Church.
그래, 봐... 그가 들어오고 갑자기 모든사람들이 관심을 갖잖아 교회에.
is interested in ~: ~에 관심을 갖다. 이건 사람, 물건한테 다 쓸 수 있어. 자주 쓰는 말 중의 하나지. 누군가가 사귀자고 했는데 거절할 때도 쓸 수 있어. 'I am not interested in you'.

너 알아 왜인지?
You know why he comes in and suddenly everybody's interested in the Church? 가 생략된 거야. 다시 반복하기 힘들고 무슨 말을 생략했는지 알 수 있기 때문에 생략해도 되는거야.

Because it takes an outsider, like me.
왜냐하면 그건 데리고 가 외부사람을 나같은. (이말은 정확하게는 이해가 안가)

Armenian/ɑːˈmiːnɪən/은 Armenia 사람이야. Aremenia는 예전에 소련연방 중의 하나였대.

GARABEDIAN: Oh, that's two.

MIKE: No, I am Portuguese.
아니, 난 Portuguese야.
Portuguese /ˌpɔːtjʊˈɡiːz,ˌpɔːtʃʊˈɡiːz/ 발음은 인터넷에서 직접 찾아서 들어봐. 많은 나라의 이름이 우리가 아는 거랑 약간 달라.

GARABEDIAN: From where?
어디에서? (어디 출신?)
Where are you from을 줄여서 말하는 것 같지?

MIKE: East Boston.

GARABEDIAN: Really? East Boston?
East Boston은 Boston에 인접해 있는 곳이래. Boston 동부 Boston은 eastern Boston이라고 해야겠지.

You don't sound like it.
You don't sound like it. it = East Boston. 그렇게 안들리는데. (그쪽 억양이 아닌 것 같은데)
look, sound, taste, smell, feel은  정말 자주 쓰여. like하고도 진짜 많이 써. 듣기에 ~같다라고 표현할 때 쓰면 돼.
eg. You sound like Korean. You look like Korean. It looks great. It smells good. It feels good. I'm not feeling well.(몸이 안좋아)

Mike shrugs. Garabedian shakes his head.

shrug /ʃrʌɡ/ raise one's shoulders slightly and momentarily to express doubt, ignorance, or difference. 어깨를 으쓱하다.

GARABEDIAN: This city, these people, making rest of us feel like we don't belong.
이 도시, 이 사람들  나머지 우리를 느끼게 만들어 우린 속하지 않았다고.
make 도 자주 쓰이는 단어지. 어떻게 쓰는지 연습해. 앞뒤의 단어 순서가 중요해. eg) You meake me happy. It looks like money makes you happy.

feel like we don't belong 소외돼...
belong (to): 물건이나 사람이 어디에 소속/속해 있다고 할 때 자주 써. 예를 들면, 컵을 씻고 나서 "이게 어디 있던가야"라고 물을 때 "Where does this cup belong?"라고 물을 수 있어.

But they are no better than us.
하지만 걔들은 낫지 않아 우리보다.
They are good but they are no better than us. We are bad but they are worse than us. 처럼 응용해봐.

봐 어떤지 걔네들이 얘들을 다루는 게. 
look at how 어떤지 봐봐...
treat /triːt/ behave towards or deal with a certian way. 사람을 대하다/다루다의 의미로 쓰이지만, 먹는 걸 얘기하면 별식, 의료관련해서는 치료법/치료 등등으로 쓰여. 모두가 같은 기본 의미에서 출발하니까 곰곰히 생각해봐.

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one.
만약 한 마을을 가져가면 아이들을 양육하기 위해, 한 마을을 가져가 학대하기 위해서. (무슨 말인지 어렵네. 얘들을 기르는데도 한 마을 전체가 필요하지만, 학대하는데도 한 마을이 관여될 수 있다(?) 이런 말인가.) 아이를 기르는게 한 마을의 책임이라면, 아이들을 학대하는 것도 한마을의 책임이다.
