settle cases against ~: 사건을 처리하다. 합의하도록 해주다. settle 은 불안정한 것을 안정되게끔 만드는 것을 말해.

ERIC: As I am sure you can uderstand, I can't discuss that with you.
확신하니까 니네들도 이해하리라, 난 의논못해 그걸 너희와. (그 사건에 대해서는 말해줄 수가 없어)

ROBBY: How about Father Ronald Paquin?

how about ~?: 아주 자주 쓰이는 표현이야.

Eric bursts out wiht nervous laughter.

ERIC: Well, I can't discuss that with you either. Come on guys.
글쎄, 의논할 수 없어 너희와 그것도.
come on은 문맥에 따라 전혀 다른 뜻이 되는 그런 말이다. '거시기하다'는 말처럼. 여기서는 '곤란한 질문은 그만해' 정도의 의미로 해석된다.

SACHA: We understand that you have settled several cases against each of them.
우리가 이해하기로는 넌 해결한 적이 있어 몇 차례 사건을 각각에 대해.
each of them: 그들 각각. 여기서는 앞에서 나온 Father Shanely와  Father Pacquin을 말해.

ERIC: Even if I'd been involved in those cases, the settlements would be confidential and I could be disbarred for the acknowledging their existence. Okay?
설령 내가 관여했어 치더라도 그 사건들에, 그 합의들은 비밀사항이야 난 변호사 자격박탈될 수도 있어
involve/ɪnˈvɒlv/: have or include (something) as neccessary or intergral part or result. be engaged. 무언가에 참여해서 관여하는 것을 의미해. 이 단어도 engage처럼 의외로 자주 사용돼. 사건에 관여됐냐고 할 때는 이 단어를 써. 좋든 나쁘든 상관없는 것 같아. 참고로 engage는 약혼하다는 의미도 있고 화장실에서 다른 사람이 들어있어서 '사용중'이라고 할 때도 사용해. 재미있지?
여기서는 have been involved 이니까 어느정도의 기간동안 계속 관여를 해온 걸 의미하나봐.
settlements 합의(들)
confidential /kɒnfɪˈdɛnʃ(ə)l/ 비밀에 부쳐진 Intended to be kept secret. 잡공고에 자주 등장하는 단어야. 잡에이젼시랑 잡 신청자간에 대화는 모두 confidential이니까 누설하지 말라고 하면서.
could be disbarred /dɪsˈbɑː/ 변호사 자격이 정지 될 수 있어.. expel from the Bar, so that they no longer have the right to practise law.
acknowledge/əkˈnɒlɪdʒ/ their existence: 존재하는 걸 알아... ack + knowledge cf. acknowledgment of what happened 뭐가 일어났는지 알아...

Robby: Uh -huh..

Robby's not backing down. MacLeish shakes his head.

ERIC: Look, I told you guys these are tough cases.
이봐 얘기했지 니네들한테 이것들은 골치아픈 사건들이라고.
tough가 여기서는 '다루기 힘든' (사건)의 의미로 쓰이고 있어. 영어에서는 우리말과 일대일 대응하는 단어가 상대적으로 많지 않아. 따라서 문맥이 정말 중요해. 이게 우리가 영어를 익히는데 힘들어 하는 큰 이유 중의 하나이기도 해.

Most of these folks, they just want some aknowlegement of what happened.
대부분 이 친구들은 원해 어떤 인식을 뭐가 일어났는지. (피해자들 대부분은 피해사실을 인정해 주는 것만으로도 만족해요.)

우리가 demand letter를 작성해서 보냈어 교구행정국에. 처음에 draw up the deman letter는 특히 잘 안들리더라. demand letter는 man letter처럼 들리더라구. admit이 mit 처럼 드리는 것처럼 말야. demand, admit 같은 단어는 뒷쪽에 강세가 있어서 강세없는 부분이 약하게 발음되거든. 그래서 귀기울여서 듣지않으면 안들리더라구. 이것 때문에 영어구조가 자연스럽에 습득이 되어야 해.
draw up = com to a halt. 끌어올려. 작성해.
a demand letter = letter of demand. a letter stating a legal claim which makes a demand for restitution or perforamance of some obligation. 여기서는 합의요청서.

ERIC: Ocassionally the Church would bring in another defense attorney to help out.
